The Triple Threat Time Machine

July 3 - I did a lot of bragging in last week's Time Machine article. A whole lotta bragging.

Hush.

Sure is quiet around here. Things were looking great through Tuesday when Cheryl Ford put up the day's best with a 42 PRA. Then, the bottom fell out. Diana Taurasi provided 22 on Wednesday. Seimone Augustus with 18 on Thursday. And then, the unthinkable: The best player with the best match-up, Lisa Leslie with 26 against Phoenix on Friday.

Things turned around when Lauren Jackson had the biggest score of the day with 37 on Saturday. I thought, "Hey, this might not be so bad. Three bad days, but maybe I can still salvage a week with three of the biggest scores if Alana Beard comes through. And I really need to see a shrink about this talking to myself thing."

No excuses, folks. You know the facts about this Time Machine thing. First, if I tell you on Monday that I am picking Alana Beard on Sunday, I am sticking with that pick. I gave you the advice. If you get screwed because of it, I am going to get screwed, too. I am not making a last minute switch just because I know that she's hurt.

That's assuming, of course, that I know she's hurt. I've also proclaimed loudly that I am not a WNBA expert. I'm a stats guy. A spreadsheet guy. A big freaking dork.

But you knew that. I'm not here to tell you about the inside rumblings and rumors. That is The Fantasy Guru's department. I am here to offer a nifty tool that will help in your decision making.

And I promise never to use the word "nifty" again.

So, it wasn't a great week. Scored 145, to be exact. I've seen worse scores, though, so if this is the worst that The Time Machine will produce this season, I'll take it. No matter what the tool, there is no exact science to project performance. If there were, someone would make millions off of this stuff. So far, I'm not making millions off of this stuff.

Alana Beard's uncertainty makes things difficult for my picks this week. She throws things out of wack. The Time Machine says to take her Wednesday, but I'm playing it safe. Instead, I'm going with Seimone Augustus.

I'd also like to use Lisa Leslie on Saturday, when she is projected to score a 35 PRA. If I do that, however, I cannot pick her today. She is projected with a 32 and the next best option is Chamique Holdsclaw with a 23.

So my hands are tied this week. And I'm not picking Lauren Jackson, which is a first for The Time Machine. She has been money for me, but the match-ups just don't work out.

Finally, if you want a third option make sure you read our fan contribution from Dror Seiffe. Drop me an e-mail, tell me what you'd like to write about, and maybe you'll get a one shot article posted on WNBA.com.

Finally, here are this week's Time Machine picks:

Monday  Lisa Leslie LOS SAS 20.5 9.5 3.2 33.2 20 10 3 32
Tuesday NO GAMES ON THIS DAY

Friday  Tamika Catchings IND LOS 16.1 7.9 3.8 27.8 16 7 4 28
Saturday  Cappie Pondexter PHO CON 21.9 3.5 2.5 27.9 21 4 2 27
Sunday  Diana Taurasi PHO NYL 22.9 3.5 3.5 29.9 25 4 4 32

By the way, notice how I suspiciously "forgot" to compare The Time Machine's picks to those of The Fantasy Guru, Matthew Brennan? Well, he won last week. I can't give him much credit, though, because he had all of the same picks, except for on Sunday. The Time Machine got a goose egg from Alana Beard. Brennan could have picked anyone with a pulse. He went with Pondexter.

There, I said it.
