April 19, 2002 — The Lynx selected forward Tamika Williams in the first round of the 2002 WNBA Draft. Williams, a 6-2, 205-pound forward from the University of Connecticut, was the sixth player chosen overall.
The 22-year-old Williams averaged 10.1 ppg and 6.9 rpg as a senior in helping to lead the Huskies to the NCAA National Championship with a perfect 39-0 record. She shot 70.4 percent from the field and received an Associated Press All-America honorable mention honors. Williams was named to the All-Big East Third Team for the past three years (1999-00 through 2001-02) and was selected as the 1999 National Freshman of the Year by the Sporting News. She was a teammate of Lynx forward Svetlana Abrosimova for three seasons.
In the third round, the Lynx selected Iowa guard Lindsey Meder with the 38th overall pick. As a senior, Meder averaged 16.9 ppg and 3.3 rpg on her way to earned a second consecutive All-Big Ten First Team selection as well as being named the Women's Basketball News Service Big Ten Player of the Year. She finished her career as the Big Ten's all-time leader in three-pointers made with 261, including an Iowa single-season record of 84 in 2001.
With the team's final pick (54th overall), the Lynx drafted guard Sharron Francis, a 5-8 guard from Old Dominion. She averaged 7.7 ppg, 3.6 rpg and 5.3 apg in 34 contests as a senior.
