Most of the Sacramento Monarchs will not be taking much of a break during their off-season. Now that the 2008 WNBA season is complete, some Monarchs will head overseas to continue playing with hopes of staying in shape and improving their game. Here’s what some of the Monarchs are up to this off-season:

posted 11/18/08: Sacramento Monarchs guard A'Quonesia Franklin has helped the Solna Vikings (Solna, Sweden) to a 6-3 record – including league and FIBA games – by averaging 9.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.9 assists. Sacramento Monarchs forward/center Laura Harper has recorded a double-double in all but two games as she has helped Besiktas Cola Turka (Istanbul, Turkey) to a 6-3 mark (league and FIBA match-ups). In the last three games, Harper has recorded 63 points, 32 rebounds and five blocks. Sacramento Monarchs forward Crystal Kelly tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double for Club Baquet (C.B.) Olsea (Barcelona, Spain) on Nov. 15 as her squad picked up its sixth win of the season. Kelly is averaging 13.0 points, 7.0 rebounds 1.3 steals, 0.6 assists and 0.3 blocks in 30.4 minutes per game. Sacramento Monarchs guard Ticha Penicheiro, who plays for GEAS Sesto San Giovanni in Milan, Italy, is averaging 11.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 3.7 steals and 0.2 blocks in 35.8 minutes per game as she has helped the team to a 4-2 mark. For Fenerbahce (Istanbul, Turkey), Sacramento Monarchs forward Nicole Powell is averaging 13.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.8 steals in 32.0 minutes per game as she has helped her team to a 3-2 record. In six games for Vomero Basket Napoli (Naples, Italy), Sacramento Monarchs guard Scholanda Robinson is averaging 14.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 0.7 assists and 0.3 blocks in 32.7 minutes per game. Sacramento Monarchs forward DeMya Walker joined CCC Polkowice in Poland and has recorded 15 points, nine rebounds, six steals and two assists in three games played. posted 11/05/08: Sacramento Monarchs guard A’Quonesia Franklin has played in five games for the Solna Vikings (Solna, Sweden) and is averaging 9.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 3.0 steals per game. She has scored a season-high 13 points twice, most recently against Université BC Neuchâtel on Oct. 29. Sacramento Monarchs forward/center Laura Harper has recorded a double-double in five of six games played with Besiktas Cola Turka (Istanbul, Turkey), three of which came in FIBA EuroLeague play. Harper is averaging 21.0 points, 13 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 1.7 steals and 0.8 assists in 39.3 minutes per game. In six games with Club Baquet (C.B.) Olsea (Barcelona, Spain), Sacramento Monarchs forward Crystal Kelly has scored 76 points – including 21 against Ciudad Ros Casares on Oct. 25 – on 22-of-40 (.550) shooting from the floor and 26-of-37 (.703) shooting from the charity stripe. Additionally, she has pulled down 39 rebounds (6.5 per game) as she helped C.B. Olsea to a 4-2 record. Sacramento Monarchs guard Ticha Penicheiro, who plays for GEAS Sesto San Giovanni in Milan, Italy, is averaging 10.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 4.3 steals and 0.3 blocks in 36.0 minutes per game. Penicheiro grabbed 10 rebounds and seven steals in addition to dishing out four assists in the Nov. 2 match-up against fellow Monarchs guard Scholanda Robinson and Napoli Basket Vomero. For Fenerbahce (Istanbul, Turkey), Sacramento Monarchs forward Nicole Powell is averaging 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals in 31.0 minutes per game. Sacramento Monarchs guard Scholanda Robinson scored 28 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field – including 4-of-7 from behind the arc – and 2-of-2 shooting from the free throw line as her squad, Vomero Basket Napoli (Naples, Italy), fell to GEAS Sesto San Giovanni. She is averaging 15.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals, 0.5 blocks and 0.3 assists in 32.3 minutes per game. posted 10/17/08: Sacramento Monarchs forward/center Laura Harper recorded a double-double in her first game with Besiktas Cola Turka (Istanbul, Turkey), the first game of the qualifying round of the FIBA EuroCup, as she scored 18 points and pulled down 13 boards in 36 minutes against Bourges Basket. She shot 7-of-14 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line while also tallying three blocks. In three games with Club Baquet (C.B.) Olsea (Barcelona, Spain), Sacramento Monarchs forward Crystal Kelly has scored 34 points – including 15 against Mann Filter Zaragoza on Oct. 8 – on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor and 8-of-14 shooting from the charity stripe. Additionally, she has pulled down 13 rebounds as she helped C.B. Olsea to a 3-0 start. Sacramento Monarchs guard Ticha Penicheiro, who plays for GEAS Sesto San Giovanni in Milan, Italy, scored 15 points including a perfect night from the free throw line (6-of-6) against Lavezzini Parma on Oct. 12. Penicheiro also recorded four rebounds and five assists in 27 minutes. In the first game of the qualifying round of the FIBA EuroCup, Sacramento Monarchs forward Nicole Powell recorded 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal as her squad, Fenerbahce (Istanbul, Turkey), picked up a 76-68 win over TEO Vilnius. Sacramento Monarchs guard Scholanda Robinson scored 10 points on 2-of-7 shooting from the floor and 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line in her first game with Vomero Basket Napoli (Naples, Italy). She also recorded one rebound and one assist in the Oct. 12 game against Liomatic Umbertide. |
