Detroit Shock and American Red Cross Recognize My Personal Heroes

The Detroit Shock and American Red Cross honored Patrick McInnis, President and Chief Learning Officer of Rock Financial, and WNBA Finals MVP, Deanna Nolan with the “My Personal Heroes” award for giving back to the community. McInnis and Nolan were honored Saturday, May 19, during halftime of the WNBA Detroit Shock Home Opener contest versus the Sacramento Monarchs.

On May 15th McInnis and Nolan, along with the entire Detroit Shock team, helped to open the Rock Financial and Detroit Shock Teen Center at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint. Through Rock Financial, the Detroit Shock and its community sponsors, the club received a completely redesigned and reconstructed teen center including a much-needed paint job, new carpet, wood flooring designed as a Shock/Pistons basketball court, new furniture and resources for college and career training.

“We wanted to get involved with a project that would have a significant and lasting impact on the city of Flint,” said McInnis. “With this renovation project, we provided resources that are in great need by teens in this community, and we are proud that the Rock Financial and Shock Teen Center will undoubtedly affect the youth of this city in a positive way.”

McInnis has is also actively involved in leadership development workshops for high schools throughout the Detroit and Flint areas. He holds a position on the non-profit board of Flint Athletes for a Better Education. In September, McInnis donated ten computers to underprivileged youth from the greater Flint area and one computer to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint along with a $5,000 check.

In 1994 and 1995, Nolan led Flint Northern High School to back-to-back championships. She was also named Miss Basketball for the 1995 MHSAA season. Furthermore, the Deanna Nolan foundation is currently working to raise funds to build a new playground at Flint’s Brownell Elementary School.

The Detroit Shock and American Red Cross “My Personal Heroes” Program is a third season initiative that encourages fans to nominate individuals or groups from their community who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Taking place all season long, the Detroit Shock and American Red Cross look forward to knowing who your personal hero is!

American Red Cross “My Personal Heroes” will be honored during a game on each of the following dates:

  • Saturday, May 19 vs. Sacramento
  • Saturday, June 16 vs. Indiana
  • Saturday, July 21 vs. Washington
  • Saturday, August 11 vs. Indiana
