SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Silver Stars assistant coaches
Sandy Brondello and
Olaf Lange have signed contract extensions, announced General Manager and Head Coach
Dan Hughes today.
“We are very privileged to announce that Sandy and Olaf have signed contract extensions as assistant coaches for the Silver Stars,” said Hughes. “Sandy has been instrumental in the growth of the Silver Stars since 2005 and is one of the most respected assistant coaches in all of the WNBA. Olaf is one of the best player development teachers in the game of basketball. His addition in 2007 was an instrumental part of our continued growth as an organization. Together they will lead our offensive development, scouting preparations and serve our players well.”
Brondello has been with the Silver Stars since the 2005 season. A WNBA veteran, she played five seasons in the WNBA with the Seattle Storm (2003), Miami Sol (2001-02) and Detroit Shock (1998-99). She averaged 11.4 points, 2.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds per game and ranks second all-time in the WNBA in 3-point shooting, connecting on 41 percent (114-278) of her shots from beyond the arc.
A native of Australia, Brondello played for the Australian National Team for 18 years and is a four-time Olympian, winning two silver medals (2000, 2004) and a bronze (1996). In 1992, she was named the Australian International Player of the Year. She also played for Germany’s BTV Wuppertal from 1999-2002, where she was team captain from 1993-97 and helped the team win 10 German Cup Championships. In 1996, she earned European Cup MVP honors after guiding Wuppertal to the European Cup title.
Brondello met Lange while playing for Wuppertal. A native of Berlin, Germany, Lange spent 10 years coaching men’s and women’s teams in Europe. He was the head coach of Wuppertal from 1997-2002 and served as head coach for the German National team from 2001 to 2003. He led Ros Casares Valencia (Spain) to the 2004 SuperCup championship and Mitteldeutscher Basketball Club to the men’s 2003 FIBA Europe Cup title. Lange studied sport science at Humboldt Universitat zu Berlin from 1991 to 1995 and devotes much of his time to individual player development for the Silver Stars. He joined the San Antonio staff in 2007 after spending two seasons as the associate head coach at Liberty University.
Brondello and Lange, who are married, bought a home in San Antonio during the off-season. They have a 1-year-old son, Brody, who travels with the team.
